John Thomas Hallett

(1876 - ????)

John Thomas Hallett was born to parents George & Johanna Hallett in Llanelli. His birth was registered in the first quarter of 1876 (ref 11a 808)

John first appears in the 1881 census for Boro'Bridge, Stoke St Gregory, a hamlet between Bridgwater and Taunton. He is recorded as a five year old scholar and having been born in Llanelli, Carmarthen; his mother Johanna was also born in Llanelli. His father George Hallett, was recorded as a brick and tile maker from Kingsbury [Episcopi].

At the time of the 1891 census John and his parents had moved to 2 Railway Parade, Bridgwater. John was recorded as 15 years old and employed as a sheet mender on the Great Western Railway. His father was recorded as a brick maker. Also in the property was 83 year old Francis Lendell and 11 month old Lily Lendell who were boarders.

At the age of 18, John married Emily ?? in Bridgwater; the marriage being registered in the last quarter of 1894 (ref 5c 604).

John's first child Lilian Sarah, was baptised at St John Baptist church, Bridgwater on 14 December 1894. Her parents are recorded as John Thomas and Emily Hallett. The family were living at Railway Parade, Bridgwater and John was employed as a sail maker.

A second child Elsie Amelia, was baptised at St John's on 25 September 1896. Elsie's baptism indicates that the family had moved to Barclay Street, Bridgwater and that her father was still working as a sail maker. Interestingly, Elsie's mother was recorded as Annie.

A further sister child Ethel May, was baptised on 4 November 1898. The families address was recorded as 59 Barclay Street and John was still employed as a sail maker.

John has yet to be located in the 1901 census but could have been our of the country, taking part in the South African war.

The same census places John's daughters Lilian and Ethel at 59 Barclay Street. Also in the property are grandparents John and Amelia Pearm and their daughter 24 year old Emma Pearm. A further grandchild of John and Amelia Pearm was also resident, 13 year old Henry Crawford.

It is not certain if Emma Pearm was John's wife, although it was noted that she was recorded as 'single'. Searches for Emily Hallett or Annie Hallett have otherwise proved unsuccessful.

John's other daughter Elsie was living with his parents George and Joanna Hallett at 2 Railway Parade, Bridgwater.

The following baptism records were found in the archives of St John Baptist, Bridgwater. It is uncertain if they pertain to children of John and Emma, just Emma or neither.
