Bessie Gould

(1889 - 1971)

Bessie was born on 13th October 1889 in Pontypridd.

She was admitted to Coedpenmaen Girl's School on the 7th of May 1895 from Coedpenmaen Infants. At this time her address was given as 41, Parade. Her date of leaving is given as the 22nd of June 1896.

The 1901 census shows that Bessie was living at 1, Lionel Road, Canton, Cardiff with her mother Harriet and two sisters Louisa and Edith Laura. Her father John Gould, brothers Ernest and George and sisters Rosa and Lilian were living at an address in Abercynon.

The records show that Bessie Gould was married to Frank Bowkett (b.1880) in Cardiff during the March Quarter of 1908.

The children of Frank Bowkett and Bessie (Gould) Bowkett:

Albert

Reginald

William Charles

Violet Harriet Rebecca

Bessie and her (first) husband Frank are known to have lived at 2, Llantrisant Road, Pontypridd. When Frank died, aged 47, in 1927 the family name was incorrectly spelt (Boukett) on the headstone at Glyntaf Cemetery and this has led to some confusion in later years. Bessie re-married, probably in the late 1930's, to Walter James Harris (b.1885) and then lived at 67, Llantrisant Road, Pontypridd.

When Bessie's mother, Harriet Gould, died in 1919 she was buried in Frank Bowkett's family grave at Glyntaf Cemetery. This fact apparently remained unknown or forgotten to other members of John Gould's family until this current research was carried out. When asked about Harriet, the various grandchildren of John and Harriet were aware only that they had separated and have expressed surprise when told of Harriet's final place of rest.

The grave is known to contain the remains of the following:

Rebecca (Bowkett / Varian)

John Varian

Harriet Gould

Frank Bowkett (Boukett)

Walter James Harris

Bessie Bowkett (Boukett)

Violet Harriet Rebecca Leighfield

Violet is the daughter of Bessie and was obviously named after her two grandmothers, with whom she is buried. Note that although Bessie was officially Bessie Harris at the time of her death in 1971, she is remembered on the headstone as Bessie "Boukett".
