Edith Laura Gould

(1891 - 1977)

Edith Laura was the youngest of John and Harriet Gould's two sons and five daughters. Her birth certificate shows that she was born on 18th January 1891 at Evans Houses, Pontypridd. When the 1891 census was taken a few months later the Gould family were shown to be living at 34, Coedpenmaen Road, Pontypridd. It is possible that "Evans' Houses" was an earlier name for Coedpenmaen Road.

She was, it is thought, John's favourite of his daughters and stories tell of him having "taken her everywhere" after the separation between John and Harriet.

The 1901 census shows that Edith was living at 1, Lionel Road, Canton, Cardiff with her mother Harriet and two sisters Louisa and Bessie. Her father John Gould, brothers Ernest and George and sisters Rosa and Lilian were living at an address in Abercynon.

Edith Laura married Adolphus Albert Winter, a police constable, on 1st August 1914. At the time Edith was aged 24, living at 57, Margaret Street, Abercynon (the Kathrens shop premises). Albert Winter was also 24 years old and the register shows that he was living at the Police Station at Aberaman, a few miles from Abercynon. Albert's father, Henry Winter, was a farmer (from the Newport area). Witnesses at the wedding included John Gould and his eldest daughter Rosa Maria Gregory.

Albert Winter's employment record shows that he had worked for the Glamorgan Constabulary from 1911. In 1917 when their first son Albert was christened they were living at 3, Salisbury Road, Abercynon. In a 1919 electoral register they were still at the same address with John Gould and a William Winter.

(William Winter is also shown, in the accident register for Abercynon Colliery, to have lived at 34, Abercynon Road in 1916. The Abercynon Road address was the family home of Joseph Winter and Louisa Jane (Gould). The fact that William lived in the two Winter family homes suggests that a link between Albert and Louisa Jane's husband, Joseph existed. Perhaps cousins?).

In 1922 Albert Winter was transferred to Ely, Cardiff and the result was that Albert and Edith Laura moved from Abercynon to 17, Windsor Terrace, Ely, Cardiff. John Gould joined them after year or so and they are known to have lived at 102, Plymouth Wood Road where John died on 7th March 1928 aged 76.

Albert retired from the Police Force in 1938 and died aged 58 in 1949. At the time of his death he was still living in Ely, Cardiff.

Edith Laura died in 1977 aged 86 and was at that time living with daughter Marjorie.

Albert and Edith Laura are buried in Glyntaf Cemetery with John Gould.
