Jane Barber was born to parents John and Alice Barber in Bridgwater, Somerset. The GRO indexes identify that her birth was registered in June quarter 1890 (5c 314).
Jane appears in the 1891 census for Bridgwater, aged one. The address appears to be Cook Yard and was listed in the enumerators book after a property at St Matthew's Field Place. Also in the property was his mother Alice, father John and brother John. John is also recorded as one year old.
At the time of the 1901 census, Jane was living at 75 Friarn Street, Bridgwater with her mother, sister and three further brothers; Jane's is recorded as aged 11.
Jane's father was taking part in the Boer War in 1901. His attestation papers record various personal information, including details of his children. Jane is recorded as having been born in Bridgwater on 09.04.1896 and Baptised in St Marys, Bridgwater on 06.05.96. It should be noted however, John's father often provided inaccurate dating information.
Jane was the second born in what became a large family, she had the following brothers and sisters.

It is believed that Leonard and Leslie died as babies.
Jane's sister Glad recalled that Jane went to Cardiff and married.
Jane's daughters May Purnell and Olive Bulgin, live in Penarth, Cardiff.
